Q:  What is a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant?

A:  A Certified Legal Nurse Consultant is a registered nurse who uses existing expertise as a healthcare professional plus specialized legal nurse consultant training to consult on medical-related cases. Certified Legal Nurse Consultants work closely with attorneys as the nursing and healthcare system experts on the litigation team. Certified Legal Nurse Consultants have the expertise to quickly pinpoint and interpret medical and nursing issues in any case involving health, illness or injury.

Q:  What is the National Alliance of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants?

A:  The National Alliance of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants is the largest and oldest association of legal nurse consultants in the United States. Registered nurses who have become members of the NACLNC® Association have completed the most rigorous certification training available in the legal nurse consulting industry. The CLNC Certification is the first and most widely recognized legal nurse consulting certification in the nation.

Q:  We always use MDs to consult on cases.  Why do we need you?

A:  The services of a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant are far more cost-effective than those of a physician.  As the healthcare provider who is face-to-face with the patient every day, the Certified Legal Nurse Consultant can educate you about a wide range of medical issues.  This knowledge saves you time and money.  We can screen cases to determine whether they have merit before you retain an expensive physician.  Our services help to reduce the hours the physician will have to bill.

Q:  Why should I hire you to research the scientific literature?  We can do this ourselves.

A:  A standard internet search will not lead you to all of the relevant standards of care.  We can weed out all of the irrelevant information and tap into authoritative sources cost-effectively.  We can apply the relevant research to the case at hand.

Q:  What is the difference between a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant and a nurse paralegal?

A:  A nurse paralegal concentrates on the legal aspects of a case.  A Certified Legal Nurse Consultant focuses on nursing and medical issues.   We can provide an in-depth analysis of the medical aspects of a case.

Q:  Can you help me with an obstetrical case even though you’re a cardiology nurse?

A:  Yes, I can help you develop the case behind the scenes.  I have RNs on my team who specialize in this area.  I can help you locate some of the best obstetrical doctors and nurses to serve as expert witnesses.
